“They had no idea of how addictive heroin-“sugars” are
“ They did not read the newspapers, listen to the radio or watch television. The only other way that the message can get across to the youth is by word of mouth”
“The community can take the responsibility of passing the message to the youth around them. The message should include the addictive nature of the drug, the difficulty in rehabilitation, the problems that it causes between siblings and parents and the great cost to maintain the habit which results in many honest people to begin a life of crime.”
Action: Chatsworth Centre in conjunction with the Youth Centre embarked on the Sugars Drug Awareness campaign, which highlighted the plight of drug addiction in our community.
Counseling, medical and legal advice was offered to the patrons of Chatsworth centre. The second phase of this campaign will commence in March and will focus on creating an awareness of the drug “Sugars” in 120 schools in Chatsworth.
Pamphlets, posters and visual presentations from recovered drug addicts were effective in communicating the message to students that are prone to become influenced.
In addition principals, educators and members of the community will be invited to attend conferences at the Youth Centre. This will assist in the alleviation of the drug problems currently menacing Chatsworth
Objectives:
• To educate young children who have not yet exposed themselves to drugs
• To assist in the rehabilitation of students who have become drug addicts and inform them of the options available
• Inform the community at large about the seriousness of the issue
• Offer counseling and assistance to families that are affected by drugs
Sponsors/Partners:
• Chatsworth Centre
• Chatsworth Anti Drug Forum, Chatsworth Child Welfare
